Type Christmas markets in Northumberland into Google and you mostly get Newcastle, which is lovely, and also not in Northumberland. Lovely if you're staying nearby; I wouldn't drive an hour for one. You spend twenty minutes looking at the back of someone's bobble hat, the lights go on, everybody cheers, then you queue for chips. Which, to be fair, is the point. ### Hexham Lantern Parade (Hexham) Not a switch-on, but the best warm-up for one. Bring a lantern to Hexham Bandstand at 6pm on Friday 13 November; it's free and you just turn up. No lantern? A child who wins the council's competition gets on stage to switch the lights on with him. No start time published yet. At 5.15pm on Friday 27 November a candlelit parade of locals, schoolchildren, choirs and pipers walks a six-metre straw goat from Wooler High Street to Ad Gefrin on South Road, where there's music, food and drink. Only one is a proper evening light trail; the rest are daytime, and around the shortest day the sun sets in Alnwick at about twenty to four, so start early. ### Winter Lights at The Alnwick Garden (Alnwick) Friday 20 November to Sunday 3 January, 4.30pm to 9pm, timed entry, closed Christmas Day. A trail of light and sound installations through the Garden, and the same ticket gets you into Lilidorei lit up at night. Adults pay from £11.50 on saver dates (23 to 25 and 30 November, 1, 2 and 7 to 10 December, 2 and 3 January), from £18 on standard dates and from £20.50 on premium dates (11 to 13 and 18 to 24 December). Same trail, nearly double the price, so go on Tuesday 1 December if you can and spend the difference on hot chocolate. It's all outdoors and standard tickets are non-refundable. My ranking, for a family with small people and limited patience: - Worth a proper day out: Ford and Etal, Winter Lights on a saver night, Hexham on 12 December. - Worth it within half an hour: Cragside for the redwood, Bamburgh on 28 November (castle by day, switch-on at 6.15pm), Belsay, Brocksbushes. - Lovely if you're local or staying nearby: the town switch-ons, Belford, Norham, the Ship Inn, Blanchland. - Wooler's straw goat is its own category. I'd go out of my way. If what you actually want is Santa, that's a different list with different prices (Kielder Winter Wonderland, Lilidorei's grotto, the Aln Valley steam trains), and some sessions have sold out already. ## Parking, trains and the dark In Alnwick, Berwick, Hexham, Morpeth and Ponteland, the council's short-stay spaces need a parking disc set to your arrival time; long-stay car parks don't. Discs are £1 from libraries, tourist information centres and local businesses. Get one before switch-on night, because reading a sign in the dark with a four-year-old hanging off your arm is nobody's idea of festive. Alnwick's council car parks, and all of Berwick's except the railway station one, are listed as free. Hexham and Morpeth have railway stations, which beats circling for a space. It's dark by about four in late November, so bring a torch, hats and more layers than the bairns think they need.
