What you actually see
A manor house here was progressively fortified against the Scots through the 14th century, starting after William de Felton bought it in 1294. The solar tower added around 1396 is the part still standing, and it leans noticeably.

Wellies, not trainers. It's a good leg stretch on the drive between Alnwick and Rothbury.
