What you actually see
A 13th century tower house on the west bank of the North Tyne, enlarged and fortified in the 14th century and ruined by the 1500s. John Dobson turned it into a mansion between 1816 and 1845, and Anthony Salvin added a west wing in 1876. It's the private home of the Braithwaite family.
