What you actually see
Sir Thomas de Lucy built it around 1364, and Henry IV's forces burned it in 1405, leaving it a shell for centuries. The historian Cadwallader Bates bought it in 1882 and began restoring it, his widow Josephine finished the job in 1914, and it has been a hotel since 1986. One tower holds 12 medieval garderobes, four to a floor.
