What you actually see

Sir Robert Bertram got permission in 1343 to turn his manor house into a castle with a gatehouse. It passed to the Ogles by marriage and in 1591 to the Cavendish family, whose Cavendish-Bentinck descendants still own it; it also houses the Welbeck Estate office.
