What you actually see
A Norman motte and bailey rebuilt in stone, with an unusual five-sided keep added in the early 13th century. King John's troops seized it in 1215, and in 1315 Sir Gilbert de Middleton used it to hold high-profile prisoners. By 1323 it was recorded as entirely destroyed and burnt.
