What you actually see
The gatehouse was built around 1350 as the entrance to Morpeth's second castle; the first, on nearby Ha' Hill, was destroyed in 1216. In 1644 a small Parliamentary garrison held it against a much larger Royalist force. The Landmark Trust finished restoring it in 1991.
Known for: Holding out in a Civil War siege in 1644.
